Hamburger Soup Instapot Ingredients

  • Olive Oil: Olive oil is used to saute the onion and garlic before cooking the beef. Other vegetable oils such as canola oil or avocado oil may also be used.
  • Ground Beef: I always use extra lean ground beef to help avoid excess grease. If you use fattier ground beef, you will need to drain some of the grease so the soup doesn’t have too much oil. If you like, you can use a mix of pork and beef for additional flavor. Ground turkey may also be used in a pinch.
  • Onion: Sweet yellow or white onion work best for this recipe. I do not recommend using red onion as the flavor is a little too strong.
  • Garlic Cloves: You want to use fresh, minced garlic cloves for this recipe. You can also use a garlic press if you have one.
  • Carrots: Use large, whole carrots for best results, cut into pieces. Baby carrots are more likely to become mushy.
  • Potatoes: I’m using large russet potatoes cut into small pieces. Other potatoes such as red potatoes or yukon gold potatoes may be used.
  • Celery: Cut the celery into small pieces. Celery is one of the primary ingredients for forming the base of any delicious soup!
  • Beef Broth: Beef broth will be the base of your hamburger soup. Make sure to use broth, not stock, as the flavor is not the same. I do not recommend using other types of broth for hamburger soup.
  • Bay Leaves: These enhance the overall flavor of the soup and are a great way to add depth easily.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: The sharp flavor of Worcestershire sauce is a great addition to cheeseburger soup. It adds so much depth to the broth!
  • Diced Tomatoes: Use canned diced tomatoes or, if you have them and would prefer to, you can also use freshly diced tomatoes.
  • Tomato Paste: Has a strong, sharp tomato taste that complements the other flavors of this soup very well.
  • Vegetables: You can use any vegetables you wish in this recipe. I’m using canned green beans. However, you can also use frozen green beans, or other canned vegetables such as broccoli, peas, corn, or even leafy greens like kale. It’s a great way to use up leftover veggies or to sneak a serving of veggies into your kids’ meals.
  • Salt and Pepper: Basic salt and pepper is fine for this recipe. I use freshly cracked pepper.
  • Italian Seasoning: Use your favorite Italian seasoning blend, or a blend of Italian seasoning ingredients such as dried oregano, basil, sage, rosemary, thyme, and marjoram.

Ground Beef Vegetable Soup Recipe Tips

  • I always use extra lean ground beef because it has less fat. This will help you to skip draining the fat. There’s still a little bit of fat left, it adds flavor to the soup. If you do use fattier ground beef, you will need to drain some of the fat so the soup doesn’t have too much oil.
  • You can use fresh vegetables instead of canned vegetables if you prefer. Just add them in at the same time as the carrots and potatoes.
